Birdie Shower
Mister Showering
(or bathing) is very important to the feather condition and skin
health of birds. Not only does it wash away irritating
feather dust and debris, but helps to moisten the skin.
Dusty feathers and/or dry, itchy skin can sometimes be the cause of
or contribute to feather mutilation or plucking. Judging
from the contentment of my guys after a good shower, it's
something that makes them feel good and leads to a thorough preening
session. You can almost hear the "Ahhhhh"
when everyone is done.
Another benefit is
that it helps to minimize the dust and debris that accumulates in
the home. This is especially true with "powder"
birds. Frequently showers coupled with the use of air
cleaners can lead to a noticeably cleaner environment. This
can prove to be especially helpful for a household where someone
suffers from allergy or asthma.
Note:
The birds in the photos below are in a large, fully screened
enclosure. This keeps them from flying away and protects
them from predators. Even so, they are never left
unattended. Please take care when bringing your bird
outside. Even birds that are well clipped can fly when
startled. If you aren't fortunate enough to have a screened
area for them, invest in a portable cage so they can enjoy the
great outdoors safely. Please don't leave them unattended or
allow them to become overheated.
If you are using a spray bottle to
shower your bird and wind up with cramps for all the pumping, it's time to
retire that spray bottle and trade it in for the Birdie Shower Mister.
This item couldn't be easier to use and provides a wonderful suction that
lasts longer than the water supply. All you need to do is add water,
close, pump and open the nozzle. One really nice thing about this item
is that the wand has a clip which can be attached to something, so you don't
even have to hold the bottle. The first set of photos with two of our
Greys shows the bottle in action for the first time. No fear and within
a minute or two, both Greys were showering. You'll notice it's a hands
free operation as I clipped the wand to the bottle and let it do its
thing. The photo below shows how it can be clipped to a cage (or aviary)
in such a position that numerous small birds can shower at once. Our
only wish was that the bottle held more water. Some of our guys take
long showers so we wind up filling the bottle once or twice. Regardless
though, it is a BIG improvement over spray bottles.
